The Most Popular Restaurants in Amsterdam
A decade ago, Amsterdam’s food was not well known. French and Italian restaurants were the best in the city. Most international cuisines were underrepresented and Dutch restaurants couldn’t exactly cover themselves in glory. Today, Amsterdam is above average. Once a small city of less than a million people, it is proving to be a center of innovative cuisine. You can find many restaurants around Amsterdam, but you should opt for the best ones.
Mercat is a popular Spanish restaurant that has joined the United Nations of slick Amsterdam restaurants. Amsterdam has many Michelin-starred restaurants, but fine dining is also a good option. It offers high-quality ingredients and well-prepared food at a fair price without being pretentious. If the service was good and you were served a full meal, it is quite common to tip up to 10%. Locals often give the next euro for drinks and snacks.
Café Binnenvisser
Friends Bob and Maarten founded this wine bar/restaurant in August 2013, after growing up in the Jordaan and hanging out on the Binnen Visserstraat. The menu is short and seasonal and changes weekly. It is only available in Dutch. Sometimes there are untranslatable dishes. Order it and you will be happily surprised. Summer is the best time to sit outside. You can also enjoy a simple lunch menu, including cold asparagus soup or fennel salami with ciabatta.
YERBA
This vegan and plant-based restaurant is making waves in a city known for its meat and cheese-centric diets. Many of the dishes can be topped off with fish or meat, perhaps because the menu includes a variety of fish and meat options. A vegan cheese board rounds out the meal. You can also opt for dessert.
Strawberries with sumac, smoked plum and meringue are a sophisticated take on smores. The best cocktails are the Smoke in the Grass, a refreshing aperitif of gin, cucumber and dill with a smoked salt rim. Or the Herb Garden with Cynar, Spector vermouth and jasmine green tea.
DAALDER
This former jazz cafe is tucked away in a corner of the picturesque Jordaan district. It offers fine dining with an understated Asian twist. Order as many dishes as you like; each is innovative and fun, from tuna tartare and avocado amuse bouche with kimchi to stroopwafel sandwich with salted caramel ice cream. Make reservations in advance.
PLLEK
The ferry from Centraal to Noord is free and only takes 15 minutes. You’re a million miles away from the gabled merchant houses of the canal belt and in a land of abandoned warehouses, industrial yards and ruined warehouses. Pllek is a 24-hour destination with a building made of shipping containers. It sits directly on the water. The menu features mostly local produce. Grab a panzanella salad or a refreshing spritz and head to the shore. Until dusk, you can watch the boats hauling their cargo down the IJ River. On Saturdays, there are DJs and yoga classes (in English).
CAFÉ MODERN
You can say goodbye to the chocolate-colored canals by taking the ferry from Central Station to the industrially cold north. Café Modern is a mix of 1950s-style Formica decor and elegant white tablecloths. It’s half school cafeteria and half upscale restaurant. Choose between three and five options from the menu, which changes weekly.
Each dish comes with the best bread and butter, made on site in the bakery each morning. This is one of the best places to spend your morning eating with your loved ones. Some people find their food very delicious. In fact, they have good reviews.
